A Michigan Tradition Since 1849

Celebrating Scottish heritage,
community, and competition for 177 years

Hosted by The St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit

More Than a Festival

The St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit Annual Highland Games are more than a day of competition—they’re a living tradition. For 177 years, people have gathered to celebrate Scottish culture through athletics, music, dance, and community.

What began as a small gathering has grown into one of the longest continuously running Highland Games in the United States—welcoming thousands each year to experience a tradition that refuses to fade.

Centuries ago in Scotland…

Where It All Began

The Highland Games trace their roots back centuries to the Scottish Highlands, where clans gathered to test strength, skill, and endurance. Events like the caber toss, hammer throw, and foot races weren’t just sport—they were a way to identify the strongest and most capable among them.

Over time, these gatherings became celebrations of culture as well, blending competition with music, dancing, and storytelling. Today’s Highland Games carry that same spirit forward—honoring heritage while bringing communities together.

177 Years and Counting

Founded in 1849, the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit’s Annual Highland Games are believed to be the longest continuously running Highland Games in the United States.

Through generations of change, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to preserving Scottish heritage and sharing it with the community. Families return year after year—some to compete, others to volunteer, and many simply to be part of something that has stood the test of time.
